WHAT IS A PSYCHIATRIST?

A psychiatrist is a physician who completed medical school and years of specialty in training in psychiatry.  A psychiatrist will diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe medication and/or other treatment options.  A psychiatrist will evaluate patients and determine if they need counseling and medication.  If someone is feeling stressed, overwhelmed, depressed, lonely, or suicidal make an appointment to receive immediate treatment.

A psychiatrist is different from a psychologist.  Although there are some similarities, for instance, they are both mental health professionals, they both work together to prevent, diagnose, and treat mental illnesses, and they are both committed to helping people remain mentally well.  However, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who is licensed to prescribe medications.  A psychologist has a doctoral degree that specializes in treatment methods such as different therapeutic treatments.
